The latest VKIC Publication, The Main Ceremonies of the Khasi was released on the occasion of the inauguration of the NRL CONFERENCE HALL at the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture [VKIC], Guwahati, by Shri Dipak Chakravarty, Managing Director, Numaligarh Refinery Ltd. Originally written in Khasi by KS Marbaniang, Sitimon Sawian and Wallamphang Roy, they have been translated into lucid English by the well known author of Shadow Men, Bijoya Sawian. It is a compilation of three of the most important ceremonies of the Khasi -the naming, marriage and death ceremonies. These ceremonies demonstrate the cultural practices of a community; moreover, abiding social relationships come to the fore. |

Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture, Guwahati organised a four-day workshop on Methods of Research and Proposal Writing on Culture and Development Issues of Northeast India from 1-4 February 2012. The workshop module aimed to fill the gaps in methods of research, develop research capacity of participants as well as concretise study concepts and proposals to a deliverable research output.

The Line System of Assam: Implications and Consequences |

The immigration of landless peasants from East Bengal to the riparian lands of Brahmaputra valley in different parts of Assam which started in the last decade of nineteenth century, gained momentum during the first four decades of the twentieth century. The colonial administration encouraged immigration, because this led to huge utilization of cultivable land and as a result collection of revenue increased. Gradually this immigration created conflicts between the indigenous and the migrant population of the area. Finally, in 1920, in response to the demand of indigenous people a system known as the ‘Line System’ was introduced in present-day districts of Barpeta, Marigaon and Nagaon in order to prevent migrants from settling or occupying land, and subsequently the system was extended to other parts of the valley. But the system was not effective as expected. |
