The Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture (VKIC), Guwahati, is organising the Janajati Sammelan 2026 on 30 & 31 January 2026 at The Assam Royal Global University, Guwahati. The Sammelan coincides with VKIC’s Foundation Day celebrations and is envisioned as a major cultural initiative dedicated to the Janajati (indigenous) communities of Northeast Bharat.

Theme: Development Through Culture

The central theme of the Sammelan, “Development Through Culture,” reflects VKIC’s long-held conviction that sustainable and meaningful development must arise from a community’s own cultural foundations. Culture, as understood by VKIC, is not limited to art forms or attire but includes values, thought systems, social relationships, and ways of life that bind individuals and communities together in harmony.

About Janajati Sammelan 2026

The Janajati Sammelan 2026 will bring together 40 Janajati communities from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura on a common platform. The Sammelan seeks to reaffirm that Janajati communities are integral to Bharat’s civilisational mainstream, embodying values of harmony with nature, inter-dependence, community living, and sustainability.

Conceived as a dialogue-oriented and participatory process, the Sammelan encourages communities to:

Reflect on their cultural strengths
Correct misrepresentations of their traditions
Build confidence in the scientific basis, sanctity, and continuity of their way of life

It provides a shared space for elders, youth, women, scholars, and cultural practitioners, enabling the emergence of creative leadership from within the communities themselves.

Action-Oriented Cultural Platform

Beyond cultural celebration, the Janajati Sammelan also functions as an action-planning platform. Inputs gathered through discussions and local-level interactions will help shape future initiatives in:

Education
Health
Culture
Youth leadership
Women’s empowerment

By fostering trust, harmony, and self-belief, the Sammelan aims to revitalise Janajati culture as a living and dynamic force—resilient in the present and confident about the future.

Formally dedicated to the nation in 1993, the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture is a research and documentation project of Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari, covering the entire Northeast India. VKIC envisions itself as the Intellectual Fountainhead of Northeast Bharat, working through seminars, research, documentation, and community-based dialogue to inspire leadership and promote the idea of development rooted in culture.

Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture invites you to its 27^th Foundation Day Celebration at 5:30 PM, Wednesday, January 31st, 2024, at Williamson Magor Auditorium, VKIC, UzanBazar, Guwahati, Assam.

VKIC family is pleased to inform all of you that the Chief Guest of this celebration will be Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, Honourable Governor of Assam.

As you know, Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture annually confers VKIC Sanmaan on a foundation day celebration. This year, VKIC Sanmaan is going to Shri Thunbui Zeliang. He is an indigenous faith promoter and traditional community organiser, Jt. Secretary of Zeliangrong Heraka Association and Liangmai Welfare Society is a school teacher by profession at Kohima and originally belongs to Nzau village, Peren district, Nagaland. Being inspired by ideology of Rani Gaidinliu and as part of Zeliangrong Heraka Education of Akhil Bharatiya Vanawasi Kalyan Ashram since 2001, he has been dedicatedly working for preservation and protection of indigenous religion and culture. He has gained confidence and popularity by his involvement and initiative in organising various community conferences like Astha Jagaran Varg among the youth, women and elderly persons, preaching of traditional faith and culture, not only in Nagaland but also in Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. He is also a very sincere and dedicated karyakarta of Janajati Vikash Samiti Nagaland (JVSN).

We are also pleased to inform all of you that the Guest of Honour will be Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Shri Rana Pratap Kalita is a former general officer commanding in chief of Eastern Command. He will also deliver a talk on "Northeast of My Dreams" and felicitate Padma Shri Smt. Hemaprova Chutia, Innovative Handloom Weaver. Sha is a renowned Indian weaver and artisan from Dibrugarh, Assam, is celebrated for crafting masterpieces like Gunomala, Naamghosha, and the Bhagavad Gita in both English and Sanskrit. Her exceptional dedication and expertise have garnered numerous awards, including the prestigious Padma Shri, recognizing her significant contributions to sustaining and showcasing the artistry of handloom weaving in India.

We will see the Ritual of the Jaintia Community in the celebration program. One of the major indigenous communities of Meghalaya, who are culturally rooted with elaborate rites and rituals holding special importance for its cultural continuity.

Tejasvi Bharat is about Bharat as envisaged by Swami Vivekananda. As he said “I do not see into the future; nor do I care to see. But one vision I see clear as life before me; that the ancient Mother has awakened once more, sitting on Her throne, rejuvenated, more glorious than ever. Proclaim Her to all the world with the voice of peace and benediction". Swamiji further went on to say 'For the next fifty years this alone shall be our keynote - this, our great Mother India. Let all other vain Gods disappear for the time from our minds.
