The Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture (VKIC), Guwahati, in collaboration with the Anundoram Borooah Institute of Language, Art & Culture, Assam, is pleased to announce a Call for Research Papers on the theme:
The Ramayana in Northeast India
The Ramayana is not just an epic; it is a living record of Bharatiya culture, shaping history, language, traditions, and moral values across India since antiquity. In Northeast India, its influence is deeply woven into local life, visible in folklore, customs, performing arts, and oral traditions.
From Madhav Kandali’s Assamese Ramayana — later enriched by Srimanta Shankardeva and Madhavdeva — to unique community versions such as the Karbi Sabin Alun, Tiwa Ramayan Kharang, Manipuri adaptations in Wari Leeba, Khasi Ka Ramayon, Garo translations, and the Mizo Ramakatha, the epic has inspired diverse retellings. Buddhist-influenced narratives among the Tai-Phake and Khampti, and Ramayanic traditions in Tripura, further highlight the epic’s deep roots in the region.
